Lotao: Neue Food-Innovationen auf Lotusbasis

Lotao: New lotus-based food innovations

Dear journalists, dear foodies,

Lotao, the well-known brand for delicious organic convenience products, has always been a pioneer in the food sector. Lotao has identified the potential of lotus as a basis for her latest product innovations and is creating an absolute novelty in the food industry with the traditional plant from Asia. After discovering almost forgotten rice varieties, a wide range of sugar specialties and a diverse range of jackfruit, Lotao is now bringing a wide range of lotus-based products to the plate for the first time. The Lotus innovations were researched and created in collaboration with Anhalt University of Applied Sciences as part of an extensive potential study on the subject of Lotus.

Lotus as a traditional food with function

The plant with the pink flowers is known to us primarily because of its beauty. However, it offers much more: all parts of the plant are edible and the lotus is even said to have medicinal and preventive effects. The lotus plant as a whole and its individual parts - including the dried germ used as tea - are of great importance in medicine in Asia, which is currently being further researched. There is already evidence that lotus is effective as a functional food. For example, it has been proven that it can help against high blood pressure, diabetes and gallstones, strengthen the immune system and have analgesic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. In addition, the lotus supports gastrointestinal regulation as an antioxidant.

Harvesting, deseeding by hand, drying – lotus seed extraction

Lotao has now discovered the previously little-known lotus seeds as a superfood: These are the edible seeds of the lotus plant, which are contained in the initially green, characteristic pistil after flowering. Lotus seeds are harvested when they turn black within four to eight months of planting. Ripe lotus seeds have an oval shape and a hard outer shell. The creamy white inner core is suitable for consumption raw or dried. Fresh, raw lotus seeds have a slightly sweet, juicy consistency. Dried lotus seeds, on the other hand, are crunchier and have a taste reminiscent of chickpeas. To be eaten, the germ of the lotus seed has to be carefully removed by hand - the resulting hole in the seed provides a crunchy chewing feeling. The seeds contain

high-quality proteins and are rich in essential amino acids. They also provide unsaturated fatty acids, good carbohydrates, fiber and other vitamins such as vitamins A and C.

Lotao's delicious lotus product innovation

Lotao always attaches great importance to the high quality of the raw materials used and to easy preparation for health-conscious gourmets. The new lotus-based product range includes stews and spreads. For everyone who loves spreads, Lotao is now launching three vegan variations based on ground lotus seeds for the first time. Combined with delicious vegetables and spices, the lotus spreads are a nutrient-rich treat. The ready-to-eat products taste great with bread or as a dip for vegetable sticks. The Tomato Lotus variety scores with a Mediterranean taste experience made from tomatoes, peppers and carrots. The lentil lotus spread is based on red lentils, carrots and ground lotus seeds. Refined with mustard seeds, ginger and curry spices, it brings a touch of India to the plate. Beetroot Lotus is the hearty German addition: Lotao combines ground linseed with beetroot, horseradish, vinegar and mustard seeds.
If you want something warm, the vegan Lotao stews with whole lotus seeds are particularly suitable. The exotic, velvety lotus curry stew is based on coconut milk and is complemented by delicious sweet potato pieces. Refined with cardamom, coriander, cinnamon, curry and lemongrass, it smells and tastes Asian-spicy. For those who like something a little more rustic, the lotus lentil stew with yellow lentils, carrots, celery and leeks and the lotus vegetable stew with potatoes, onions, peppers and caraway are the perfect choice. Simply heat the contents of the stew jar in the pot or on a plate in the microwave and your Lotao Lotus enjoyment is ready!
The spreads in handy 140g jars and stews in practical 330g screw-top jars are now available exclusively in the Lotao webshop .

about Lotus - the potential study

  • Lotus seeds are both super and functional food: they satisfy hunger, provide essential nutrients, protect against illness, and support physical and mental well-being. This results in particular purchasing interest among the respective target groups of vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian people.
  • The high protein content of lotus seeds (16-21%) is a striking pro argument for the flexitarian target group.
  • Although the consumption of ready meals is increasing in society and especially in single households, it has a bad image. Lotao works against this with high-quality raw materials, a unique taste and high sustainability standards in content and design.
  • Lotao Lotus products combine what those surveyed in the study wanted: new, vegan, climate-neutral, good-tasting and (visually) appealing products.
